A Tale of a Trail of TVs
January 26, 2008
Article and Illustration by Jim Burger
When you get to be my age, new experiences become increasingly rare. Still, this past weekend I did something I’ve never done before — I bought a brand-new television set. For me televisions were always something that just sort of showed up. I hadn’t given any thought as to where they actually came from. I mean like from a store or something. Read more »
My Crazy Life
Why It Works & Why I Love It

I remember it well. I was having lunch with my friend Sandra Magsamen and we were laughing about a recent article that said women’s brains are hardwired for multitasking but men’s brains … well, they aren’t. Of course we both already knew that, having been married for years.

Women today juggle a multitude of roles — career woman, wife, mother, bill payer, chief cook and bottle washer. No wonder we’re often overwhelmed. And those piles of paper! A mother of seven sits on a bench, lacing up her skates; a retired gentleman practices figure eights with deep focus; and two instructors prepare for a day of teaching. Students chat on the benches as they get ready for practice. Read more »

It’s a new year and I have made a vow to get organized for a year’s worth of birthday parties — parties for my own four children and the parties they are invited to each month. It’s amazing how much time birthday parties can take up on weekends! Read more »

The Minivan: Still In There Pitching
January 14, 2008
By Martha Thomas
In 2001, Ford created a minivan with the works: temperature-controlled cupholders to heat or cool, a refrigerator with a
see-through top, a microwave, a built-in vacuum cleaner and, to the wonder of soccer moms everywhere, a Maytag washer and dryer. The Windstar Solution, alas, never went into production. Of its many features, only the electronic gadgets — the navigation system, video monitors and Gameboy hookups — made it into the mainstream.
