It’s the holidays, for crying out loud. Our hearts are supposed to be filled with joy. But on the heels of charges that Tom Petters, chairman and CEO of The Petters Group, parent company of Polaroid, committed mail and wire fraud, forcing the iconic company into bankruptcy; that Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich tried to sell Barack Obama’s former Senate seat; and last but certainly not least, that one of the most well-known names on Wall Street, Bernard Madoff, manufactured a $50 billion dollar Ponzi scheme, even the strongest among us might opt for a dose of Xanax over that traditional glass of sparkling wine. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, coupons are definitely here to stay: 2009 marks the 100th year anniversary of coupons. C.W. Post, creator of Post Cereals, developed and distributed coupons in 1909 as a marketing device to help sell his product. Coupons have definitely weathered the test of time, and in today’s market, they add up to billions of dollars in savings for the consumer. This Valentine’s Day, take a break from the roses, chocolates and fancy dinners to focus on what really matters — your heart. The MidAtlantic Cardiovascular Foundation hosts Woman to Woman, Heart to Heart, a free heart health seminar designed to educate women about heart disease and to inform them of ways they can prevent it. At the event, cardiologists will present a series of lectures on stroke and heart disease, as well as cholesterol, blood pressure, and body mass index screenings. Gingerbread has been an American favorite for generations. Its history reaches back to a time long before the founding of our country, however—about 3,000 years, in fact. For centuries, many versions of gingerbread existed around the globe. There is little doubt, though, that American recipes were most influenced by 18th-century British gingerbreads. Rolled and shaped gingerbread cakes (cookies, really), sweetened with sugar, molasses, and/or treacle, frequently appeared in British cookery books of this period. Many Colonial Americans, already well versed in British cooking styles, owned and cooked from these books, thus perpetuating English culinary traditions. Read more »

Shade, deep shade, surrounds my house. It is pointless to battle this situation and try to grow a traditional sun-loving bluegrass lawn here under ancient oak trees. So instead of fretting about wild moss invading the lawn’s grass, long ago I decided to remove the grass (I buzzed it all away with a weed whacker) and enjoy and encourage the moss in all its natural glory. There’s no mowing, no fertilizer, and no pesticides—simply a velvety blanket of green which made its own way into my once-patchy lawn. Read more »

The Market Center Merchant’s Association hosts Saturdays with Santa this holiday season. The holly old elf is traveling by fire truck through the Market Center area, Baltimore’s oldest shopping district.
The festivities begin Saturday December 6 from 10:30am to 12:30pm. The fire truck sends Santa off from the Box Office entrance of The France-Merrick Performing Arts Center (Hippodrome Theatre) on Eutaw Street. Read more »
