When she’s not at her day job, Sherry Feldman runs her own company, Art Tile Design. The Reisterstown mother of three makes mosaics that decorate everything from small picture frames to fireplaces.
“I started out making things for friends,” says Feldman, who works as a designer for a closet company and has a degree in textile design from the University of Maryland. “Every time I made something, people would say, ‘I want one.’”
Many of her mosaics are frames for invitations. She figures she makes about 60 a year. “It’s something personal for people,” Feldman says. “I really like working with each person.”
She also does larger-scale projects such as large mirror frames and fireplaces. One fireplace surround can take more than 40 hours to complete.
Feldman — who says she’s always been “artsy” — has made clothing and quilts and has drawn since she was a child. When she discovered mosaics about seven years ago she found her métier. She bought a small kiln to fire her own tiles, which she uses whole or broken up. She also salvages tiles that stores would otherwise throw away.
One recent project incorporated shards from a broken vase that a friend had saved because the vase had belonged to her late mother.
Says Feldman: “If my friends have something broken in the house, they give it to me. I’ll probably do something with it.”
