Knit Your Way Out of a Knot

December 23, 2007
By Corinne Bowen

Knitting is not just for grandmas and elderly aunts anymore. I used to poke fun at friends when they pulled their knitting out of a bag and started clicking away.

Turns out they were in good company. Young women ages 25 to 34 are the primary force behind a boom in yarn sales across the country, according to the Craft Yarn Council of America. The trade group also reported that, overall, 36 percent of American women know how to knit or crochet, a 50 percent increase over the past 10 years.

Now I’m one of them. My first experience with knitting was in an introductory class with Sue Caldwell at Lovelyarns in Hampden. We gathered on Thursday nights for a few weeks during the winter to work through the frustration of our first knits and purls. Finishing a scarf filled me with pride. Knitting after work, while waiting in a doctor’s office or between sips of coffee during a break was meditative. It was a way to be busy but not stressed — a way to relax while also being occupied. I’ve been knitting now for a couple of years and can’t imagine not doing it. If you have not ventured into the world of knitting or crocheting, give it a try. This is the perfect season to make a cozy new scarf.
