Prints are an important trend for spring and summer. They span the gamut from exotic animal prints to geometric designs. When it comes to choosing prints, keep in mind that light colors tend to make you look bigger and dark colors make you look smaller. The scale of the print should be in proportion to your body type. Smaller body types should not wear a print that overwhelms their frame. Fuller-figured girls should avoid itsy-bitsy prints as they will make you look bigger. Prints with a dark background are more slenderizing than those with a light background. The farther spaced apart the print, the larger you will generally look. When choosing a top or a skirt in a print, make sure you place the print in a place you want emphasize. Prints are eye-catching and often trump color, so placement is key if you’re looking to highlight assets and/or camouflage body challenges.
Mixing prints is a fun way to express creativity. (In other words you’re wearing the clothes, they’re not wearing you.) For inspiration, look to the boys. Guys have traditionally expressed creativity by mixing patterned shirts and ties. The key to working this trend is to pull out one of the less dominant colors and wear it in the opposing silhouette. To balance the look, make sure the scale of the print in one of the silhouettes is smaller than the other.
