St. Agnes Honors Sisters with Heart

On Sunday, February 8, St. Agnes Hospital presented the first-ever Sisters with Heart Award to five women who have dedicated themselves to raising awareness about health issues in their community. More than 250 people attended the Sisters With Heart awards ceremony at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum to honor and celebrate the women from Baltimore who have made contributions in bringing health care solutions and resources to their neighborhoods.

The following women were selected from 30 nominations for their dedication in making health a priority for others:

Janice Jackson:  Jackson is changing the self-perception of what it means to be disabled.  Disabled herself, she has dedicated herself to helping other disabled women learn to cope and ultimately overcome their disabilities.  She created Women Embracing Abilities Now, an organization that offers disabled women holistic healing of the mind, body and soul.

Ms. Carol B. Payne:  Payne has focused her attention on cardiovascular disease.  She currently works with community members to improve health education.  Her outreach efforts include a partnership with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to address cardiovascular health among public housing residents and working with local grocers and fast food establishments to increase the availability of heart-healthy foods.

B.J. Shaneman:  A community advocate, Shaneman has organized numerous health care events and programs including free screenings for her neighbors throughout the years. Additionally, she has worked to raise awareness about the health of children in need and made that a priority in her community outreach efforts.

Patricia Stewart, Ph.D.:  Stewart serves as the resource person for many churches and has hosted numerous community health fairs and screenings.  Her dedication and commitment to creating a healthier and happier community is clear in all of the volunteer work she does throughout the year.

Delores Sweets: Sweets is a pediatric nurse who is committed to improving health and health education for those in her community.  She has organized free health fairs, workshops and seminars for her neighbors on a variety of topics including hypertension, nutrition, managing medication and coping with Alzheimer’s.
